New England Style in West Sussex

Once in a while you come across a single image that wows you, it doesn't necessarily have to be grand mansion, it may be the simplicity but boldness of a space that makes an impression on you and when I first saw the image above,  it was wow factor and worthy of exploring more.

Firstly, where and what is New England style? The New England district lies North of New York and includes towns such as New Hampshire, Vermont and Connecticut. The area is on the coast North of New York and is famous for its weatherboard and shingle New England style architecture, some of which dates back to the 1800's. The simple architecture of the New England style has continued to be replicated by architects today for its timeless appearance and ability to adapt to modern day living. Not only is this style of architecture still being built in the USA, architects throughout the world are building homes like this for their good looks and relaxed coastal style. The house I am featuring today is New England style, however it has been designed and built in the UK by Randell Design Group with the interior design by UK designers, Driftwood & Velvet. New England in appearance, this beautiful home's location is on the West Sussex Coast of the UK.

One of my readers recently commented, she "preferred a rustic coastal look" which is probably how I would describe the open plan living area of this New England style home. A rustic table with industrial style chairs has been softened by the curvaceous rattan chairs at each end of the table. The over sized, pendant lamps make a definite statement above the table. I love how the designer has used contrasting shapes and materials in the adjacent glass lamps suspended above the kitchen island.

The interior designers have combined the perfect blend of textures and materials in this large, open plan, kitchen/dining/living space.  More importantly the large statement pieces are the perfect proportion for this area. Sometimes home owners are tempted to fill large spaces with lots of furniture, however this can make a large space look cluttered, a few large statement pieces are much more complimentary. I would even go as far to say that small spaces can look better with one or two larger pieces rather than choosing furniture that is a little too dainty. Throughout this beautiful home there is the perfect balance of design from both the architects and interior designers so take time to soak up the detail and be inspired...

This New England style home is about "less is more", a combination of traditional and contemporary in the right proportions and balance. Both the architects and interior designers have created the most wonderful, easy to live in coastal home.  If you would like to see more images or contact the designers about your next project, please use the links above.
